Demdike Stare - Forest Of Evil
This is not witch-house. When I first heard about witch-house I assumed it’d be witchy, and housey. It’s not, and I’m frankly not sold on it yet, but I might yet come around.
This, however, is very witchy and in places a little housey. They’re named after Demdike, who was tried for witchcraft along with the rest of the Pendle Coven - Pendle Coven is another, closely associated act. The point I’m making is that this isn’t witch-house, but it is genuinely witchy, pagan stuff, and some of the best ambient music I’ve heard in years.
Tonight I’ve played things from the new album Liberation Through Hearing, but this tune from their release just-before is probably my favourite so far. It’s combined with some very spooky vision, so that the video comes across like Boards of Canada doing their best to invoke Hecate. There are some dronier parts, some stuff that reminds of oldschool dub-techno, but it’s this horror movie stuff that I like the best.
